Remembering Central American Refugees In Our Lenten Prayers

As we prepare ourselves for the Paschal Feast during Lent, we are mindful of the passage from Micah 6:8, “What is good and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

We would like to call special attention to the plight of families in Central America who everyday are forced by violence to flee their homes. These are primarily poor woman and children who, instead of refuge and protection, are often met with closed doors and hostile voices both at home and abroad.

We offer the following materials for discerning how to live out our Baptismal Covenant through prayers and engagement this Lenten Season

Prayers of the People for Each Sunday in Lent

"Stir up your power among us that we might act on behalf of the poor, the oppressed, the emigrant in the land, and fashion us in accord with Christ's teachings:"

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me."

Honoring the Life of Oscar Romero: Bulletin Insert for March 26th

As Archbishop of El Salvador, Oscar Romero was inspired by the radical solidarity of his friends who were martyred for siding with the poor in El Salvador.

“When I looked at Rutilio lying there dead I thought, ‘If they killed him for doing what he did, then I too have to walk the same path.’”

He found himself called to take action, became a champion for Salvadoran's rights and an outspoken critic of abuses. He was shot while celebrating mass on March 24, 1980. The day before, he had preached a sermon in which he demanded that Salvadoran soldiers stop repressing the people.
